3 Important Stylistic Choices You Need for Your Bathroom Remodel

You've decided to sell your house and are getting it ready to go on the market. Overall, your house is in pretty good shape, except for maybe your bathroom. It could probably use some updates. As you go about remodeling your bathroom, there are some important stylistic choices you'll need to make in order to make it an attractive feature in your home.

Floor Material

Your choice of bathroom flooring material sets a foundational tone for the rest of your bathroom. While there are some flooring options that shouldn't be used in bathrooms, there are plenty of other options that work quite well, depending on your budget. Your bathroom needs flooring that will hold up well against wet, damp conditions. Different types of tile, such as porcelain, glass, ceramic, and natural stone often work well for this. These tiles tend to be moisture resistant and fairly durable. They can be cold and slippery though, so you'll need to take the finish into account when choosing tile. Likewise, vinyl flooring can be another viable option for the bathroom. Vinyl is durable, comes in a variety of style options, is relatively affordable, and tends to be easy to clean. When using vinyl, it's often best to use sheet vinyl in lieu of vinyl tiles. Water may seep between the seams of vinyl tiles, resulting in water damage.

Sink and Vanity

Whether washing hands, brushing teeth, or adjusting appearance, people spend a decent amount of time in the bathroom in front of the sink and vanity. This can be a good part of the bathroom to update if you want to quickly boost the value of your bathroom. Compared to a kitchen sink, you have a lot more options for materials in a bathroom sink. Marble, quartz, granite, and engineered stone are among the most popular materials. Once you choose the countertop and sink material, select a hardware finish that suits it. Don't forget to take the size and shape of your bathroom into consideration when choosing a new sink and vanity unit too.

Bathtub or Shower

To be considered a full bath, a bathroom needs to have a sink, toilet, and bathtub or shower. Many bathrooms have both, though that isn't necessary. Contemporary-styled bathrooms often feature a walk-in shower with glass panels surrounding it. When done well, this can give a bathroom a very clean, sophisticated look. Of course, you'll need to make sure the panels are spotless for pictures and shows, so if you choose to go this route, keep in mind that you'll need to clean them thoroughly.

Bathroom remodels are one of the most common home improvement projects. They tend to recoup a lot of the cost put into them, especially when the renovations are more minor. When remodeling your bathroom, you'll need to make stylistic choices regarding the floor material, sink and vanity, and what type of bathtub or shower you intend to use. By making the right decisions, you can give your bathroom a new, updated look that is more likely to be a hit with prospective buyers.
